Although having a loved one with autism can have its challenges, there’s hope from ancient ayurvedic wisdom that can help to ease your autistic child. Autism spectrum disorder can delay a child’s physical, cognitive and social development, including motor skill development, learning, and communication, and interacting with others. The earlier ASD can be diagnosed, the more quickly appropriate therapies can begin. The gut of the kids with ASD is erratic and troublesome always. The gut and mind are influenced by genetic, environmental, and Prana factors. Thus treatment is focused on gut, mind, and vitality (Prana). Ayurveda says the root of the problem is in mental pathways which have a close relationship with the gut. Many Ayurvedic herbs and therapies are efficient in the safe management of Autism spectrum disorders.

Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the mental ability to communicate and interact. It is a chronic disorder and can last for years or be lifelong. Autism spectrum disorder impacts the nervous system and affects the overall cognitive, emotional, social, and physical health of the affected individual. The range and severity of symptoms can vary widely. Common symptoms include difficulty with communication, difficulty with social interactions, obsessive interests, and repetitive behaviors. Several factors may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and attention issues.

The gut of the kids with ASD is erratic and troublesome always. Gut health has close relation with the mind. As per ayurvedic biology, the mind is the medium that connects the sensory and motor systems with the perception of the brain. So a disruption in the mental pathways can cause distortion of sensory perception and motor responses. Ayurveda pays special attention o the Agni element which, apart from the basic functions of digestion and assimilation of food, plays a critical role in keeping toxins away. The accumulation of toxins can create mental Dysregulation. The mental pathways are referred to as SROTAS in ayurvedic literature. Toxins can cause clogging of these subtle pathways and derange their functions. This will result in the malfunctioning of many physiological mechanisms.

Ayurveda says that the major problem is in the mental pathways called Manovah Srotas. The mind is the processing center of emotions (hopes, thoughts, and inner desires). The disorder is different from neurological problems. We need to improve mental perception learning and memory. This is possible as preventive as well as treatment level.

Ayurveda has a good protocol for Suprajanan, Garbh Samskar, and post-partum care of the child which is a preventive approach to ASD. The aim is to get balanced Shukra Dhatu for healthy progeny. If prevention is better than cure, the Ayurvedic approach is best.

Assessment of Dosha Prakruti of Child
Ayurvedic treatment agenda begins with a Psycho-somatic assessment of the child. Different treatment protocols are recommended for different Dosha dominance (Prakruti) of autistic children. For example, the Vata type child is lean and hyperactive, the Pitta type child is angry violent, and digestive issues while the Kapha type child is introverted, timid, and poor skill of communication.

We need to enhance perception, memory, and cognitive abilities. Several Ayurvedic herbs viz Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi), Nardostachys Jatamansi, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Yashthimadhu), Centella asiatica (Mandookparni), and Acorus calamus (Vacha) are efficient in the treatment of Autism. Omni Cept, Medhya drops, Prana oil, and Ayurvedic Ghee are efficient ayurvedic medicines. Therapies like Nasyam and Marma manipulation are also effective in lasting relief from autistic issues.
